Following a full day of workshops, candidate speeches and dinner, the Building to Be the Change 2010 program concluded with a Senate Candidate Forum. About 200 people attended the workshops and another 200 joined for the evening program at the First Plymouth Congregational Church in Englewood.
Much appreciated was US Representative Jared Polis who skillfully filled in in the absence of Senator Michael Bennet. Invitations to both Colorado Democratic Candidates, Andrew Romanoff and Michael Bennet had been made in November. The absence of Michael Bennet from this forum was never explained. He was apparently in the Denver area on February 13 because his campaign web page advertised a candidate meet and greet in the Denver area on the day of the Be the Change candidate forum.
The largest standing ovation of the event was for Andrew Romanoff when he said that the best fix for our broken heath care system is: "Change the eligibility age for Medicare to zero....Now."
Be the Change USA wishes to thank our outstanding workshop speakers, event volunteers, food preparation and service volunteers and most of all a fantastic group of progressives who attended this event.
The February 13th candidate forum was part of a process of determining if Be the Change USA would endorse one of the Democratic candidates. At a Be the Change meeting in October, Bennet campaign coordinator, Adam Dunstone challenged the group to define a process to evaluate the candidates and have them each explain their positions. You can listen and watch Adam's pitch to at the October meeting by clicking HERE.

Analysis of Data from Colorado Open Records Request
January 26, 2009
Be the Change, USA requested copies of email records from the Colorado Governor’s office detailing citizen support for candidates for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Ken Salazar. The governor’s office established a website and a phone number to receive input from citizens about the appointment.
A CORA request was made for phone records as well as email records. All phone records were denied, 391 email records were made available as was a six page document submitted in support of Andrew Romanoff.
The 391 records represent approximately ten percent of all emails received.
Analysis of citizen input is consistent with Denver Post report citing an AP request for records showing Andrew Romanoff with the majority of the support, 35% and Mike Miles with the second highest number of supporters, 16%. All other candidates, individually, received less than 10% support. Six percent nominated themselves. Michael Bennet, the appointed candidate, received one email comment asking that he not be appointed.
The CORA docments included a six page document submitted on behalf of Andrew Romanoff. The detailed endorsement listed 181 supporters from sixty two counties across the state including state elected officials, county elected officials, Democratic party officers, state agency leaders, school board members, corporate leaders, labor groups, seven regional news organizations, in addition to other groups including an insurance group, a Chamber of Commerce and non-profit organizations. Speaker Romanoff received the support from a university president, health care systems president, hospital president, hospital association officials and number of Republican organizations and individuals.
